Gut Health & Inflammatory Support
Glutathione
Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant produced by the body. It is made from three amino acids: Glutamate • Cysteine • Glycine Glutathione is found throughout the body and plays an important role in protecting cells from oxidative damage, supporting normal liver detoxification pathways, recycling antioxidants, and maintaining cellular health. It is often referred to as one of the body's major intracellular antioxidants.
How Does It Work?
Glutathione helps protect cells by neutralizing reactive oxygen species and free radicals produced during normal metabolism and periods of cellular stress.
It also participates in:
• Antioxidant defense
• Cellular repair and protection
• Liver detoxification pathways
• Recycling vitamins C and E
• Immune-system function
• Maintaining cellular redox balance
Glutathione continuously cycles between its reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) forms as it participates in antioxidant reactions.
Potential Benefits:
ANTIOXIDANT PROTECTION
• Neutralizes reactive oxygen species
• Protects cells from oxidative stress
• Supports cellular defense systems
• Helps maintain normal redox balance
LIVER & DETOXIFICATION PATHWAYS
The liver uses glutathione during normal processes that help transform and eliminate certain compounds from the body.
Glutathione supports:
• Normal liver function
• Phase II conjugation pathways
• Processing of certain drugs and environmental compounds
• Cellular protection within the liver
IMMUNE & CELLULAR HEALTH
Glutathione is involved in:
• Immune-cell function
• Cellular signaling
• Protein function
• DNA synthesis and repair processes
• Protection from oxidative cellular damage
SKIN RESEARCH
Glutathione has also been studied for its potential influence on:
• Melanin production
• Skin pigmentation
• Oxidative stress in the skin
• Overall skin appearance
Evidence for cosmetic skin-lightening benefits varies by formulation and route of administration.
What Can Lower Glutathione Levels?
Glutathione status may be influenced by:
• Aging
• Oxidative stress
• Illness
• Poor nutrition
• Certain medications or toxins
• Increased metabolic stress
The body can also produce glutathione naturally when adequate building blocks are available.
Possible Side Effects:
• Nausea
• Abdominal discomfort
• Headache
• Flushing
• Injection or infusion-site reactions
• Allergic reactions
Safety and effectiveness can differ significantly between oral, inhaled, topical, and injectable forms.
Important to Know:
Glutathione is essential to normal human biology, but claims that supplemental glutathione can “cleanse” or “detox” the entire body, prevent disease, or reverse aging are not established.
Its strongest biological role is as an important component of the body's natural antioxidant and cellular defense systems.
